You may experience strange problems (at least they seem to be at the first glance) with networking on your machine which is running in VMware Player.

For instance, your virtual machine has a host name "albert". When your main (physical) machine is online, "albert" can be pinged as usual. But when you are coming offline, "albert" can no longer be pinged. The explanation is simple -- there is no local network between your physical machine and "albert".
In order to enable such a local network, you would need to go to menu "Virtual Machine->Virtual Machine Settings". Switch to "Network Adapter" in the left frame and choose "Host-only" in the right frame. In this case it does not matter if your main physical machine is online or offline -- you will be able to ping "albert" and access internet from it.

We have just finished upgrading our VMware -- vCenter Server, ESX on our hosts and virtual machines to the forth version. We expected to spend all weekend on this, but it turned out we managed to upgrade in just about 5-6 hours! And that is without any previous serious experience with VMware! Well, yes, we have only two hosts, no cluster and just about 20-25 active virtual machines. But anyway. We had some problems on our way, but generally installation was not that complicated.
